Lifetime Achievement
2003 Award Winner
Joe Marillo
Lifetime Achievement Awards winner Joe Marillo lived and performed in Las Vegas
for ten years, before choosing to come to San Diego in 1973. Since then, he's performed
and taught and collaborated with others so often, the tenor saxophonist has become
known as the Godfather of San Diego Jazz. The list of fellow performing musicians
includes Dizzy Gillespie, Art Pepper and Sonny Rollins; while his local admirers include
Peter Sprague and Buddy Blue. His list of styles have run the gamut from mainstream
to bebop to ballads to pop, while he also excels on the alto sax and flute. Now, of
course, the San Diego Music Awards are making it official: Joe Marillo is a name synonymous
with great San Diego jazz, period. |
